Columbia Heights Minnesota's History

Columbia Heights is one of the oldest suburbs in the northeast metro area. The city's history began with the settlement of Fridley Township in 1852 and continued by incorporating Columbia Heights. Olive Thornburgh won a $150 gold piece in a contest to name the new town. The Minneapolis Improvement Company Northeast offered the prize, which platted the village.
