Bloomington, Minnesota, has a rich and varied history, which began in 1839 with Chief Cloud Man relocating his band of the Mdewakanton Dakota from Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis to the area called Oak Grove. The first European settlers to live in Bloomington were Peter and Louisa Quinn. In 1843, they built a cabin along the Minnesota River near present-day Portland Avenue. Gideon Pond, a missionary sent by the government to teach farming methods to the Native Americans, also settled in this area that same year. He established Oak Grove Mission, his log cabin home, where he held church services and taught local Dakota subjects such as school and farming.
