Shakopee, Minnesota's History

Shakopee, Minnesota, is a city with a rich history. The first steamboat arrived in the town in 1842, and two years later, Oliver and Harriet Faribault built the first log cabin. In the late 1840s, missionary Samuel W. Pond came to the area at the invitation of Chief Sakpe II. Pond founded Shakopee’s oldest church, First Presbyterian Church, in 1855. 

The city of Shakopee was officially incorporated in 1857. The first mayor, Norman W. Kittson, also operated the town’s first store out of his home. In the early years, Shakopee was primarily a farming community.

The 1860s brought significant changes to Shakopee with the arrival of the railroad. The Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway Company built a line through the city in 1862, and the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway Company followed suit in 1867. The railroads brought new people and businesses to Shakopee, transforming it into a thriving commercial center.

Shakopee continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1886, Shakopee became the county seat of Scott County. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1887. In 1900, the population was 1,374. By 1910, it was 2,208.
