Mankato, Minnesota's History
Mankato's history began in the 1700s when the first Europeans came through looking for the Northwestern Passage to the Far East. Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson 1852 staked the first claims in Mankato.
The city was officially founded in 1858 and was named after the Dakota chief, Mankato. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s due to the Minnesota River Valley Railroad construction. The city became an important trading center for southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.
The city continued to grow in the early 20th century with the addition of several factories. The population peaked in 1960 at just over 31,000 people. The city has since experienced a population decline but has remained an important regional center.
