Plymouth's history stretches back to pre-Colombial times in the early 1400s. The native inhabitants were the Dakota, and their encampment was located at the north end of Medicine Lake. This lake was given the name 'Mdewakan,' which means 'Lake of the Spirit, and is believed to have been named after a warrior whose body was never found after turning over his canoe.
