Chanhassen, Minnesota's History

The history of Chanhassen, Minnesota, is fascinating! Early settlers arrived during the 1850s to stake out farms. The records show that the first claim settled in Chanhassen Township was in June 1852 by Joseph Vogel, west of Rice Lake and near the Shakopee Station. Vogel was a German who lived in St. Paul before coming to this area. HistoryIn August 1852, Joseph Kessler, another German, followed Vogel and settled four miles northwest of him. The families became good friends, and in July 1854, Joseph Vogel married Kessler's sister Veronica. It was reportedly the first marriage of a white couple in Carver County. The town of Chanhassen was founded in 1858 and named after the Dakota word for sugar maple tree: "cha-ha-sa." The sugar maples were plentiful in the area and were tapped for their sweet sap each spring.

Most of the town's activity in the early years revolved around farming. In 1868, the first creamery was built, and two years later, a cheese factory opened. But in the late 1800s, Chanhassen began to grow. The Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie and Atlantic Railroad came through in 1886, and the village was platted in 1888.

The first bank opened in Chanhassen in 1902, and the Village of Chanhassen was incorporated. After World II, the population grew from 632 in 1940 to 2,473 in 1950. This growth continued throughout the next few decades, with the population reaching 11,526.
