Northfield, Minnesota's History

Northfield, Minnesota, was founded in 1851 after the U.S. government imposed a treaty on the Dakota people, Siouan-speaking Native Americans who had been in this territory since at least the 17th century. According to the treaty, a European-American settlement was allowed in southern Minnesota. Most of the Dakota were removed to a reservation near New Ulm, Minnesota. The treaty marked part of the decline of the Dakotah Nation, which was adversely affected by infectious disease and warfare. The people have undergone a revival since the later 20th century, however. Northfield is just one example of how the treaty paved the way for the foundations of cities in Minnesota.

The city was named after Northfield, Massachusetts, by John W. North, one of the first settlers. North volunteered in the Mexican-American War in 1846 and settled in the area now known as Northfield upon his return. The city proliferated due to its location along the Cannon River as a power provider for mills and other industries.

In September 1876, the town witnessed one of the most infamous bank robberies in American history when the James-Younger Gang attempted to rob the First National Bank of Northfield. The robbery attempt failed; two gang members were killed, while several others were wounded or captured. The event put Northfield on the map and earned it the nickname "the town that stopped the James-Younger Gang."
